Excitement is building as several ELCA synods are passing resolutions of support for Veterans and the Federal Chaplaincy in the months leading up to the ELCA National Assembly in New Orleans. Meeting in August 2016, the national church will be presented with a collection of these resolutions memorialized to all 65 synods for consideration. So far the Southeast Iowa Synod, Eastern Washington-Idaho Synod, Southwest Texas Synod, Southeast Minnesota Synod, the South Central Wisconsin Synod, and the Pacifica Synod have passed resolutions. There are as many as six additional resolutions pending scheduled synod assemblies during May and June.
These resolutions are similar in wording and content expressing thanks and support to military Veterans and the chaplains who serve them. Congregations are encouraged to set aside a day of ministry and encouragement for this important ministry to those who serve in the military chaplaincies, Veteran Hospitals, and Federal Prisons. The resolutions offer specific ways to thank and serve veterans as well. Support at synod assemblies of these resolutions are sought and encouraged. The excitement is growing and rolling down river to New Orleans.
